Tyranid Infestation - Stage 1 Complete

The ruins are fully infested at long last.  I thought it would be really cool to put stained glass windows in the Basilica Administratum terrain.  But it took freaking ages to get something approaching acceptable.  I basically used the plastic from blister packs, which was fine.  I tried using felt tip markers for the stained glass but it just didn't work.  I experimented with washes next but finally settled on ordinary acrylic paint thinned with glazing medium.

It was meant to be a nice afterthought. Six frickin' windows took about six hours.

After painting my first window I remembered how terrible at colour theory I am.  It was orange, yellow and red.  These are not good stained glass colours and it looked like a lolly wrapper.  I switched to purples, blues and reds and this was better.  I ended up rushing it a little because the whole thing was taking longer to do than all the rest of the building put together.

All your base are belong to us

The puddles in the Manufactorum sections were ridiculously easy.  I just slopped Nurgle's Rot all over the top of a Caliban Green basecoat.  Done.  I'm definitely warming to GWs technical paints and actually used Blood for the Blood God in the red parts of the stained glass. It has a really nice shiny, translucent finish.

Flight Seven Zero Niner, you have permission to buzz the tower.

Played a couple of games with the terrain now and I'm pretty pleased.  It feels like home ground advantage but is just as tactically challenging for me as other players, since you can hide all sorts of things behind them (including pesky Daemon Princes which are tiny)

The Green Weed

I started to paint my red weed infestation and then changed my mind.

The more I thought about it, the more it seemed wrong.  Maybe the red was too high a contrast to the grey.  Maybe it wouldn't match my army.  Maybe I was running out of red paint.  One of these statements is definitely true.

So it was back to the old standby.  Elysian Green, Nurgling Green, Ushabti Bone.  The picture below is taken before the Biel-Tan Green wash.

And this little diorama has the green wash applied.

The only other colours I've used are Tin Bitz and Brass Scorpion.  I didn't want to make it too busy.  The Green Weed makes it pop enough.

I think terrain should provide an interesting context and backdrop for your models, not overshadow them.  I didn't want it to completely distract the eye from my army (although this picture might suggest otherwise).  At the same time I wanted to tie it in with my colour scheme so that it all hangs together.

Also, I'm lazy and have a ton more stuff to do before the board is finished.  As a well known wargame podcaster once said, "The best colour is 'done'."

Devil in the details

I managed to paint 11 Devilgaunts before losing the will to live.  So that will have to do for now.  This means that I have painted a total of 83 gaunts with only 9 remaining.  You'd think it would be easy to make the big push and finish the last few wouldn't you?  Its not.  Its boring.

I may need to undergo a partial lobotomy in order to get the last few done.
I even painted the eyes, teeth and hooves of this batch.  I thought it might make me more fond of the Termagant model.  But they're still shitty-statline-remove-them-in-handfuls-nobody-gives-them-a-second-look workhorse gaunts at the end of the day.  Actually, thats not entirely true.  In games, I find a sprinkling of devourers in the brood makes them much more shooty and not just deckchair units. Which is nice.  Its not great, but its nice.  Maybe I'm just playing them wrong.  I don't care, gaunts are my least favourite unit.  Ooooh the irony.

On a plus note, my infested terrain is coming along nicely:

"All about me the red weed clambered among the ruins, writhing to get above me in the dimness."

I've finished building 3 ruins now and they have been basecoated with the first lot of drybrushing finished.  That lovely man Nathan at my local GW store gave me a load of discontinued gaming hills which are rife with possibilities. I plan to build a full Tyranid infestation board and my Zuzzy gaming mat is on order. Sorry Nathan, I can't afford a Realm of Battle board but I am entirely willing to prostitute myself further with a view to obtaining more free stuff.
