Hardwired Hatred

I was drunk when I first converted a destroyer into a Canoptek Moth and it ended up a bit lopsided but I always liked it.  I used it as a Spyder in a couple of games to no great effect and then moved on to other projects.  Necrons were always a secondary army for me which I speed painted and just used when I wanted to have a bit of fun.

Now, I'm not so sure.  There are some awesome conversion opportunities for the deathless androids.  Google "Scorpion Wraiths" and you'll see what I mean.  I've seen some great crossover with the Armies of Death in AoS too.  Giant skeletal constructs fit seamlessly with the Necron vibe.  You just paint them silver instead of white.  Since they are 'Tomb Kings in Space' I guess that makes sense.

The Heavy Destroy model is meant to be a centaur (kind of) and I had built my moth to look insectile.  So I thought it would probably look stupid if I stuck the humanoid torso back on top.  But I'm actually quite stoked with how it turned out.  Especially considering the only reason I did it was to squeeze 3 Destroyers into my army.

I've still got another two to finish off but they will be rushed and inferior because I've only got 5 days to go before Maelstrom XI.  I can't even remember what parts I used for this one so I'm not going to attempt to triplicate it.

I'm pretty sure all 3 Destroyers will be prioritised by my opponents, focus fired and blasted off the table in turn 1 anyway.  I should probably try to put them in cover and get a Cryptek to babysit them for that 5+ invulnerable.  It won't make much difference.  Most tournament opponents I face are well equipped to delete one unit from the board regardless of how tough it is.

But I don't really want to build more to add redundancy into my list.  I went down that route with Tyranids and ended up with a ton of unassembled/unpainted models.  Or I had to force myself to paint them and ended up hating them (wouldn't you know it, Hive Guard are back in fashion and everyone is spamming them again).

I think I want to build The Deceiver next.  I've got two out of the 3 C'tan Shards so I may have to complete the set.  It would involve spending too much money and chopping up a perfectly good model kit for conversion parts however.

However, under no circumstances will I cave in and buy a Tesseract Vault.  I'm declaring this now, publicly and in an oath binding manner. May The Emperor strike me down if I go back on my word.

"And behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him."

  1. That's a really cool conversion - even if your opponent is not as tatctic savy they might go after this one since it looks so menacing!

    1. Sigh. Its always the way. New, favourite models always die an ignominious death on their first outing. Thanks Xarfai.

  4. Looks awesome, dude! Is that all freehand on the shoulders and the back of the carapace? Even if it is transfers, great job blending it in with the weathering and damage.

One of my gaming buddies made a bunch of those scorpion Wraiths, and they look awesome. So intimidating.

    1. Ahh, they're decals. I'm not mad enough to try and paint perfect circles and straight lines. Yet.

I have 3 spare Wraiths and those Scorpion conversions are so tempting...

    2. Getting decals on that well on curved surfaces is its own kind of impressive. Plus, like I said, the weathering over them blends them in with the base paint job really nicely.

    3. Micro Sol and Micro Set are your friends when applying decals on uneven surfaces. You'd be surprised at how often technique trumps talent. Actually, you probably wouldn't.
