Chickenhawk

A work in progress shot of my Renegade Knight.  Of course, hardly anything is glued because it's going to be painted in a bajillion sub assemblies.  I even tried out a colour scheme for the carapace... *ahem* - armour plating.  This is Cobalt Blue Colourshift metal paint over the top of a gloss black primer.  My airbrush is hardly professional quality but I think it looks veeery interesting.

I've done a lot of work on the model but I haven't actually finished anything and tend to just sit there, patting myself on the back whilst opening another Tuatara craft beer.  It was all becoming a bit self indulgent.  I thought a blog post might help me get my shit together and determined that I should finish the legs first:

I've used quite a few bits of kit on it now and keep going out to buy new stuff.  40k is like a disease.  Brand new Maulerfiend and Heldrake kits have been sacrificed to the cause in order to make the shin guards and arms.  I think I've got enough plastic crack to finish it now.

This is yet another reverse joint walker so I have named him Chickenhawk.  Lots of Admech sigils on him at the moment but I need to Chaos it up at some point.  I don't just want to stick spikes on it though.

I'm currently debating whether to remove the pauldrons altogether and sculpt some fleshmetal or nurgly shoulders.  At least I've made some measurable progress.

  1. Aw yeah! Look at that! I love the hands and the pose so far. The legs look good as well - it might be as simple as removing or defacing the Machanicum cogs - they look plenty Chaos with the claws and some of the armour.

    1. Thanks Xar. I don't want to remove the cogs! Many Bothans died to bring us those cogs. Ok, I might deface them, a bit.

  2. Don't remove the cogs! It was made by the True Mechanicum, not the ignorant cowards who were corrupted by the emperor and live out their shallow lives under his pointless restrictions, never knowing the full glory of The Machine in all its aspects!

One thing I did with the armour plates on my Renegade Knight was trim down the pointy crosses on the larger ones a bit, so they're just spikes, with no rounded bits left.

That colourshift paint looks fantastic there, as does the chickenwalker conversion, with some great bits you've done to fill in the extra leg segment there.

    1. Well if I was ever in doubt about your true allegiance before (possible 4 armed God leanings), you've definitely cleared it up now. I wont remove the cogs but might make the skull half look a bit evil. Thanks for your thoughts and I was thinking of trimming down the pauldrons as you suggest. I just want to keep it clean and I'm frightened of mucking it up. Chaos doesn't have to be all nurgly and disintegrated all the time, does it?

    2. The Two Khorne Knights that won best painted at the last tourne were clean in both terms of painting and the builds (lots of skulls but well placed and the armour wasn't damaged by it). Also this to date is the best renegade knight I have seen on the Internets and its very clean, I mean tentacles yes but still clean:

    3. Mine isn't nearly as impressive, but that pic there was one of the big inspirations that got me to make my own Slaanesh Knight. Absolutely gorgeous Model.

The other two Renegade Knights I have in mind are going to be a bit different. One is Nurgle, so it is going to be all gross and falling apart. The other is going to accompany my Iron Warriors, so it's going to be a bit beat up, but all just superficial or signs of completed repair work that didn't include full aesthetic restoration, just functional.

There is SO MUCH TRUTH in that statement!!!!

That's a mighty fine looking beast you've got going there, love the looks of it so far, purple pauldrons and all!

    1. Haha cheers Cheef. The colour shift paint is supposed to be blue shifting to purple but it kind of looks the other way round doesn't it? More experimentation required methinks

  4. "It was all becoming a bit self indulgent." + Purple Pauldrons, it sounds like Slaanesh has corrupted both you and this knight :)

    1. This one is supposed to be under the protection of Tzeentch but the purple and tentacles suggest otherwise. I don't really want to theme the army around on God tho so all good

  5. That's some amazing conversion work, I love it well done mate :)

    1. Thank you. If it turns out half as good as one of your Renegades, I'll consider it a success :)

  6. With those legs its more like a Cerastus, maybe run it as a Castigator? They look awesome and I know how fiddly all that reposing is, even more than what I did. Would those daemonic heads on the calf pistons look better turned round, with the top of the head towards the back of the knee joint?

    1. Cheers Dave. Funnily enough, I kept switching the piston heads around as you say. When I realised that I'd been dicking around for an hour on this minor detail I just glued them on as is. Sometimes you just got to call it done! If I ever run this as an army then its got to be a detachment of 1 Knight and 2 Armigers in Admech (the only models I've got). Not even sure about the rules for Castigators or whether they are allowed.

    2. Ok, I've switched the position of the piston head things again!

    1. Thanks! I was thinking I'd like to do more at some point. Probably Armigers though.
